FRIDAY MAY 10TH, 2013

Good morning and off we go into the Wild Trew Yonder for a little more May-hem for a Friday. It's a dull morning with rain.  In 1979 it was a scorcher of a day with a high near 32.  In 1982 we had a bit of frost in Utopia and Elmvale but highs near 23.  This Sunday is Mother's day so if you are going to rent a movie to celebrate how about "The Mummy's Return".

Jacques Cartier arrived at Cape Bonavista, Newfoundland in 1534, on this date for his first voyage to Canada. It was a 3 week crossing from France, and he was slowed down ten days by ice.
In 1844, The capital of Canada was moved from Kingston to Montreal. The first meeting of the Parliament of the United Canada's was held on June 13th, 1841 in Kingston on the site of what is now Kingston General Hospital.
In 1876 Alexander Graham Bell demonstrated his telephone before the Academy of Arts and Sciences as he showed up with Bells on.
In 1877 President Hayes had a telephone installed in the White House for Crank Calls.
In 1924 there were a couple of events of note.  Prohibition ended in Alberta after being implemented in 1916.  There had been a lot of importing from B.C. in the ensuing years but finally was noted on with the Alberta Government controlling it
Also in 1924 J. Edgar Hoover was named as the Director of the FBI.  I guess he actually turned out to be the very first MR. DRESS-UP.
In 1940 this date saw Prime Minister Chamberlain resigned and Winston Churchill take over as British Prime Minister.
In 1963 the Rolling Stones did their first recording session with Decca Records (recommended by George Harrison by the way) They did Chuck Berry's COME ON.

In 1970 Bobby Orr Scored what is now known as "THE GOAL" the one that is seen in the famous photo even on TV in the series "BONES" in the office of the FBI agent Seeley Booth. Of course he is a big Hockey fan in real life having grown up in Buffalo where his dad worked on WKBW Channel 7 on "Rocketship 7".

In  1983 Laverne and Shirley's last episode was shown on TV.

Who can forget it....the Girls, Lenny and Squiggy,  I've tried (even a Lobotomy) but it just won't work. It was originally a spin-off series from Happy Days as Laverne and Shirley were friends of Fonzie.  I must admit I did not watch it much but I do remember a few of the Characters.  I have noted that one of them "Lenny" real name Michael     McKean still gets a lot of TV work.

In 1994 Barbra Streisand began her first concert tour in 30 years, People.  She does not like doing "Live" shows and has trouble remembering words (she uses cue cards just like me when I sing Karaoke) Big deal with a voice like that who cares. I thought we'd hear one of Barbra's best to lead to our next file....."People for our Peeps"

Now it's time for Birthday PEEPS for People

Fred Astaire (Mr. Top Hat etc) was born in 1899.  The fabulous song and dance man had a million seller with one of the Longest Song TITLES of all time. It was done with Jane Powell and was called "How could you believe me, when I said I loved you, when you Know I've been a Liar all my life".  They just called it "the Liar Song" for short. My Fav is "I dreamed I fell down a spiral staircase because I was a Fred-a-Stairs" :).
Hockey's Ryan Getslaf (which may be more than I am getting on here) is 28, Gary Owens (Laugh-in etc) is 77 with his hand still cupped to his ear, Pat Summeral (1930-2013) Donovan (Mellow Yellow etc) is 67.
1960 BONO was born (lead singer of U-2) Dave Mason is 67, Nancy Walker (1922-1992) She was the first "Quicker Picker Upper", Sir Thomas Lipton was born in 1850. He was  the first to grow Tea but he was first I guess to grow it in little ' Flow-Thru-bags and he also stopped going out with the ' No Tea Lady of Shady Lane'.
Also born on this date John Wilkes Booth (1838-1865), Canadian Super Model Linda Evangelista is 48, she was a Miss Teen Niagara and was born in st. Catherines.

and finally on this rainy day...

for Sunday...."Mom's the word" and if you are going to do something nice for her, don't create more work for her in the end.

mornin' everybody mornin'
