WEDNESDAY MAY THE 1ST ,2013

Good Wednesday, as we try to add a May "zing" to your morning and dance around the May Pole for the 1st day of the 5th month. It's a beautiful day in my neighbourhood with sun and a temp around 17 Degrees at 8 am. Much the same type of day in 1985 but in 1984 it was a cold day with near zero temperatures and according to my files the Midland Municipal building staff were moving back into their digs after the big fire a year earlier. In 1993 The Leafs beat Detroit in that great play-off series in game 7 in Overtime but then lost out to L.A. The Leafs kick off their series with Boston tonight for their first play-offs in 9 years. I'm from Missouri on this one.

1786 Mozart's Opera "Marriage of Figaro" premiered in Vienna to lukewarm response.

In 1889 Bayer introduced Aspirin in powder form.  It has almost become the "miracle Pill" It's origins can be traced back to Willow Bark.

In 1909 "The Taming of the Brew" opened up when Prohibition started in Ontario and "the World of Boozy Song" was no longer tolerated (at least in Public).
In 1912, the first $5.00 Bills were introduced, the New $5's and 10's have been introduced and even from Space by Chris Hadfield our Man in Space and my personal choice for our next Prime Minister.

but that's no way to spell SPACEMAN. In 1931 the silver dollar was introduced on this date.

In 1919 The big Winnipeg Strike by the building trades took place over union recognition and collective bargaining.

In 1921 The Quebec Government took control of Liquor Sales and the province stayed "WET" while all around it the was DRY.

In 1928 Lei Day began (a Hawaiian celebration) where everyone gets Lei-d.  Very popular. I think each Island has a different greeting.

1931 saw the opening of the Empire State Building. It is still a high-light of any tour.

In 1951 Mickey Mantle hit his first home run.

In 1952 Mr. Potato was introduced.





1961 Fidel Castro announced there would be no more elections in Cuba. ( Now how is that fair:)

Elvis and Pricilla Beaulieu got married in 1967.  (She had lived a Graceland since 1961) They separated in 1971 and were divorced in 1974.

1999 the 125th Kentucky Derby was held.

2011 President Obama announced  that Osama Bin Laden had been captured and was killed by American Military Forces.
