It's the Middle of the week again and the middle of the month, the 15th and it's time to throw another BLOG on the fire. 30 years ago we checked in with only plus 11 and it was cool and windy, but the next year 1984 it was even cooler with only plus 7 and a low of plus 2 with a touch of frost in some Low Lying areas. It was better not to Lie Low for that day. I have a ready wit, so I'll let you know when it's ready. Todays forcast is calling for some rain.
Champlain was on the move as he started sailing for Canada on his first trip to claim land for France in 1603.
In 1718, London Lawyer named James Puckle patented the Worlds First Machine Gun. He called it the Puckle Gun and it could fire 9 rounds at a time. According to him it was able to fire Round Bullets at Christians and Square Bullets at Turks (I don't really know what the advantages were unless he fired at the Christians and they Round Danced and the Turks Square Danced to keep away from the shots. It was not adopted or produced however.
In 1814 U.S. troops destroyed the Town of Port Dover during the War of 1812. Of course if they did that now they would be run over by thousands of Motor Cycles which converge there every Friday the 13th. They'd be Harley Davidsoned to death.
In 1907, Toronto Plumbers went on strike. The Little Plumber Boys were having Pipe Dreams about more money evidently and The Big Smoke ended up out of Plumb.
In 1905 Nevada was founded , when the San Pedro, Los Angeles and salt Lake railroad arrived in Las Vegas, connecting it with the Pacific and the countries main rail networks. Railroad backers auctioned it off and it was incorporated in 1911.
In 1928 Mickey Mouse hit the movie screens when Walt Disney created him after his first creation, Oswald the Lucky Rabbit was taken over by Disney's Superiors because he did not have artistic ownership of him.
In 1930 Ellen Church became the first Airline Stewardess on United Airlines. She had approached the President of Boeing Air Transport about a pilot position and was turned down, but she was also a nurse and he liked the idea of having a registered nurse aboard wch commercial flight to assuage the passenger's fear of flying. She did have her Pilot's licenece by the way.
The Years was 1940 and the NYLON STOCKING was introduced and there was a real run on them. It didn't catch on till after the war though because of course the cost. They became pretty handy too if you got stranded because of a broken fanbelt
In 1961 the airwaves were sprouting the "Bonanza" theme on radio as well as TV with the Al Caliola version of the song hitting number 19 on the music charts.
In 1989 The Blue Jays fired Jimy (one M) Williams and replaced him with Cito Gaston and the rest is Blue Jay History.
In 1991 Angry Truckers closed down 20 KM of the 401 Toronto causing a huge Traffic Jam and lot of Angry non-truckers as well.

We kick off with James Mason the actor (1909-1984), Singer Eddy Arnold (1918-2008), Walter (Turk) Broda (who was Mr. Maple Leaf and one of the greatest Clutch Goalies of all time playing all his career with the Leafs) He was born in 1914 and died in 1972. Also born on this date Baseball's George Brett is 60, and Canuck Justin Morneau is 32,singer Trini Lopez is 76 (he use to sing in Jack Ruby's Clubs by the way), Joseph Cotton (actor) (1905-1994) He was even in Citizen Kane and I remember him most in the scary I"Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte" with Bette Davis. The Tennis World's Andy Murray is 26 and hockey's Jordan Eberle is 23. Joseph Wiseman another Canuck was born in 1918 on this date and is probably best known as the "Baddie" in the First James Bond movie..".Doctor No"
