WALKING became a heck of a lot easier when shoes started to be made for both right and left feet in 1210. Without that, it had led to people doing a lot more Tripping. :) , and everyone dancing like they had 2 left feet.
In 1830 the first Fountain Pen was patented by a Mister Hyde but it wasn't until 1884 when Lewis E. Waterman constructed the first Workable Fountain Pen. I guess that led to 54 years of frustration writing letters etc. (snail-mail) Sort of like today's frustration with computers. The first railroad timetable was published in a newspaper on the same day in 1830.In 1874 Levi Strauss marketed his Blue Jeans with copper rivets and priced them at $13.50 per dozen and 18 years later (was helped greatly when George Sampson patented the Clothes dryer which people loved to take for a Spin). That led to a lot of Agitators coming into the mix and of course it put people through the Ringer.
| Here's an old wringer for sale, much more modern than the first ones. |
The Saturday Evening Post cover featured a painting by Norman Rockwell for the first time in 1916.
It was called "Boy with a Baby Carriage" and was an instant success. He actually started out doing work in "Boys Life" the Boy Scout magazine, where he became Art Editor at age 19. He died in 1978 at age 84.
He did over 4000 original works over his Lifetime.
In 1932 Amelia Earhart leaves Newfoundland to become the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic. The Movie starring Hilary Swank was filmed in various parts of Canada and there is a local tie-in with some of the antiques coming from a local Antiques market including a couple of Items that were bought from our collection. One was a large Ruby Red Perfume Bottle which can be seen on her dressing table in the movie, which was kind of a thrill for us.
In 1940 Igor Sikorsky unveiled his Helicopter Invention.
In 1954 Bill Haley and the Comets released Rock Around the Clock (a B side) as Bill Haley's Orchestra but it did very little until 1955 when it was released as part of the "Blackboard Jungle" movie soundtrack and then it went on to sell something in the neighbourhood of 22 million copies.
In 1959 Ford won it's battle with Chrysler to call it's new car "FALCON" It was a small car that went up against the Valiant and the Corvair in the compact size.
There was even a Canadian edition of the Falcon in 1960. It was produced for one year only and was essentially a re-badged 1960 falcon with it's own unique grille, tail lights, and external trim, including a red Maple Leaf insignia. Despite strong sales (5% of Ford's total Canadian output) the Frontenac was discontinued and replaced by the Mercury Comet for 1961. (I called my 1973 a Vomit)
1960 FRONTENAC
1980 was a big day for Canada when Quebec voted almost 60% NOT IN FAVOUR giving Rene Levesque the go-ahead to negotiate Sovereignty-Association with the rest of Canada.

On This date in 1993 to celebrate the last "CHEERS" episode Jay Leno did the Tonight show LIVE from the Bull and Finch Bar in Boston. The cast all seemed pretty CHEERY. (they formed an AD "HIC" committee.
