HI it's 2 pm and I'm just starting this blog now because of our Router Problems from Yesterday (connecting to our printer etc) so I have been out cutting the neighbours grass with my little tractor.  I managed to get it stuck down near the water and had to get out my snowblower to pull it out of the Mud so it hasn't been a very productive day.  Hope it's been better for you.  We had frost a couple of these dates in 1983 and 1984 but some nice May 16th's as well, in 1991 and 2001 for instance with top temps in the 20's. The Lilacs are bloomin' ready to Bloom, in fact they are starting right now.

Oh this is a biggie when George A. Hormel and Company introduced HIS MEAT PROCESSING EMPIRE
which invented the product SPAM in 1937. It of course is the Canned cooked pork product which has even turned up as an important part of E-mail.  "Spam e-mail apparently tastes better than the lunch meat as well"
For students ...It's a lot of fun if your cooking with Pam and cooking Spam which makes you happy as a Clam when you are trying to cram.
In 1911, the remains of a neanderthal man were found in Jersey UK.  We of course sometimes are able to see our own Neanderthal Man  on Coaches Corner during the "good ol' Hockey games" on CBC TV although I happen to like him.
In 1920 Joan of Arc (not to be confused with Jonah and his Ark) was Canonized in Rome, which is apparently much more fun than when she was Burned at the Stake.
In 1929 the first Academy Awards were presented with Howard Hughes produced "WINGS" taking the first Best Picture Award. He of course later Produced the Spruce Goose, the gigantic wooden Plane.

In 1930 Uranium was found in a mine in Timmins Ontario which was to produce Fuel for the Atomic Bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.  The Bomb dropped by the Enola Gay was called "Little Boy" and Fat Boy" on Nagasaki but according to what I have read it wasn't used in either Bomb.

In 1954 Ted Williams who was just back from a broken Collarbone and got 8 hits at DH.  

in 1966 The Beach Boys released the LP "Pet Sounds" which barely made the top 10 on the charts but is since regarded as their best.  It included "God only Knows"considered by many as the best love songs ever.

IN 1982 The New York Islanders won their 3rd Straight Stanley Cup on this date.  The won their 4th a year later.

In 1986 Bobby Ewing came back from the dead on the TV show Dallas, after Dieing a year earlier.  He was only in the shower all that time and it was just a bad dream for all  of us. He should have come back singing "A white Sport Coat and a Reincarnation" I guess.

In 1990 Jim Henson died at age 53 and Sammy Davis Junior at 64 on the very  same day. It was a bad day for the entertainment world for sure.

Henry Fonda (1905-1982), Janet Jackson is celebrating today (her nips is 47), Woody Herman (1913-1987) Tori Spelling is 40, Debra Winger is 58, Megan Fox is 27, Pierce Brosnan ( one of the James Bonds) is 60, Liberace (1919-1987) who proved "all that Glitters is not Gold, Tracy Gold (of Growing Pains is 44, Billy Martin the baseball Manager (1928-1989) and David Boreanaz (Seely Booth on "Bones") is 44 Today, Yannick Bisson who is best known as Murdoch on "Murdoch Mysteries" is 44 (he started acting at age 13 and got his big start with Megan Follows on "Hockey Night". Canuck comedy guy Kevin McDonald is 52 (co-founder of The Kids in the Hall) Jack Morris of Baseball fame is 58.

The Billboard Music Awards will be coming up this Sunday night with lots of Canadian content and there will be lots of New faces on hand.....same People just different Faces!
