FRIDAY MARCH 1ST , 2013

IT'S A T.G.I.F. DAY (thank goodness its frozen?) The 1st day March comes in like a lamb or lion...what do you think for this mornin with our blue skies. Its Ken here with a few well-frozen words....In 1988 it came in like a Lion with snow and cold temperatures...As of this writing its -10 in Orr Lake so I guess we are wandering around like sheep, with no new snow, at this moment anyway.  By the way 2 days ago Toronto had a record 12.4 cms of snow or as I like to call it "hitting below the SNOW-BELT. In 1988, March came in like a Lion with 25 cms of new snow and it was a cold one as well. I think we have to go with March coming in Like a Lamb for March 2013.

HISTORY HIGHLIGHTS:
In 1632 Sammy Champlain was appointed first Governor of Canada.
The first stamps showing scenes, were issued in the U.S in 1869. (by the way, in Canada in 1978 new postal rates came into effect at 12 cents for a first class letter)

It was on this day in 1875 that the Toronto Hospital for Sick Children opened with 6 beds and a staff of 3.  There were no patients the first month but a little girl who had fallen into scalding water became the 1st patient in April.  Her name was Maggie. The hospital  was an 11 room house in downtown Toronto and was rented for $320.00 per month.

In 1890 the first edition of Sherlock Holmes was published.  It was a "Study in Scarlet".  It was on this date in 1912
Albert Berry made the first parachute jump from an airplane. (before that the first jumps were made from a ladder and usually on Leap Day February 29th).
In 1927 The privy council Britain granted Newfoundland
the rights to Labrador (rights recognized from the Treaty of Paris in 1763). Newfoundland had offered to sell it to Quebec for $30 million in 1925 but Quebec didn't take it.  (I'll bet they would now)
The 12th Academy Awards in 1940 "Best Picture" Oscar went to GONE WITH THE WIND.

By the way George Reeves of "superman" TV fame was in that movie.

In sports, Wayne Gretzky passed Gordie Howe with his record 1,050th Assist on this day in 1988.

PEEPS BORN ON THIS DATE:

In 1810 Frederic Chopin was born in Poland , Glenn Miller in 1904 and died in 1944. Harry Belafonte is 86 and singer of the "Day Olds" at Coffee times around the province. Sonny James was born in 1929, David Niven was born in Scotland in 1909,  Roger Daltrey is 69 today, Catherine Bach is 59 ("Daisy Duke") Ron Howard is 59 as well.  Robert Conrad was born 78 years ago and Alan Thicke is 66 (and about to get thicker doing the "Dairy Queen" Commericals.
He was born in Kirkland Lake and his last name was Jeffery.  He also does speaking engagements as well as TV and Movie gigs.  Would you rather see Alan Thicke giving a speech or Monsieur Trudeau. They get similiar fees. who wo....Justin Bieber is 19 today...Yes you can still find some Biebers on the canadian nickel.

and finally on this sunny morning...

Quebec Premier Pauline Marois (I pronounce it Mare-wass because of her rules for non use English in Quebec) continues with her (no English) pronouncements.  I guess her next ridiculous step with be to deny Pool Halls snooker players the use of BODY ENGLISH.

Mornin' everybody Mornin'
