In 1921, Our Sloop De Jour (actually Schooner) the "Bluenose" was launched in Lunenburg at a cost of $35,000. It was built for fishing and racing and boy could it dangle and it could stop on a dime. (old expressions, sorry).
In 1953 Dr. Jonas Salk announced on radio a vaccine to prevent Polio.
In 1955, "the Ballad of Davie Crockett" was the number one song in the U.S.
"Bridge on the River Kwai"
took the Best Picture Award at the 30th Academy Awards in 1956 and Alec Guiness won for Best Actor. It won 7 Academy Awards and of course for 3 weeks following everyone was whistling its theme "The Colonel Bogey March"

Fortunately, a catastrophic meltdown was averted and there were no deaths or direct injuries from the accident. Not Like the Chernobyl affair where people still have to put blankets over each other to go to sleep.
In 1992, The New York Rangers won the Stanley Cup for the first time in 50 years.
